It is possible to travel to Mount Koya using your Japan Rail Pass , but the journey will be somewhat slower than described in the next section.
The itinerary is as follows:
Take the JR Kuroshio train from Shin-Osaka Station to Wakayama Station. The journey will last about 1 hour.
Note: Shin-Osaka is not Osaka Central Station, but the hub for Shinkansen bullet trains .
However if you are arriving from Tokyo this will be your last stop on the journey
Once at Wakayama Station, take the JR Wakayama Database Line for 19 stops, until you reach Hashimoto Station . Getting to Hashimoto from Wakayama will take about an hour.
From Hashimoto Station, take the Nankai-Koya Line for 9 stops, until you reach Gokurakubachi Station .
From there, take the Nankai Koyasan Cable Car for a short 5-minute ride. Get off at Koyasan station and you will have arrived. From there you will have to walk about 2.3 km until you reach your destination. It will take approximately 40 minutes to reach the Buddhist area from Koya Station.

Below you will find a detailed guide on how to get to Mount Koya from Osaka, without the JR Pass ( quick itinerary ).
Take the Nankai Line from Osaka Nanka or Shin-Imamiya Stations and travel to Gokurakubashi Station.
Once you are in Gokura kubashi take the Cable Car Nankai Koyasan

From there you will have to walk about 2.3 km until you reach your destination. It will take approximately 40 minutes to reach the Buddhist area from the station.
An alternative would be to take a short 10-minute bus ride, which will cost you 290 yen, to Senjuinbashi . This is the point where all the tourist information offices are located.
You can also save money by purchasing the Koyasan World Heritage Ticket , a combined ticket that includes train, cable car and bus.
